Sri Varahadeva Appearance
Information – Varaha Dvadasi commemorates the appearance of Lord Varahadeva as the celestial boar avatar of Lord Krishna.
Lord BrahmÄ said: When the unlimitedly powerful Lord assumed the form of a boar as a pastime, just to lift the planet earth, which was drowned in the great ocean of the universe called the Garbhodaka, the first demon [Hiraį¹yÄkį¹£a] appeared, and the Lord pierced him with His tusk.
PURPORT
….The floating of the planets in the weightless air is due to the inner constitution of the globes, and the modernized drilling of the earth to exploit oil from within is a sort of disturbance by the modern demons and can result in a greatly harmful reaction to the floating condition of the earth. A similar disturbance was created formerly by the demons headed by Hiraį¹yÄkį¹£a (the great exploiter of the gold rush), and the earth was detached from its weightless condition and fell down into the Garbhodaka Ocean. The Lord, as maintainer of the whole creation of the material world, therefore assumed the gigantic form of a boar with a proportionate snout and picked up the earth from within the water of Garbhodaka. ÅrÄ« Jayadeva GosvÄmÄ«, the great Vaiį¹£į¹ava poet, sang as follows:
- vasati daÅana-Åikhare dharaį¹Ä« tava lagnÄ
- ÅaÅini kalaį¹ ka-kaleva nimagnÄ
- keÅava dhį¹ta-ÅÅ«kara-rÅ«pa
- jaya jagadÄ«Åa hare
“O KeÅava! O Supreme Lord who have assumed the form of a boar! O Lord! The planet earth rested on Your tusks, and it appeared like the moon engraved with spots.“
(SB 2.7.1 purport)
Åukadeva GosvÄmÄ« said: Dear King, the Supreme Lord in His boar incarnation, who accepts all sacrificial offerings, lives in the northern part of JambÅ«dvÄ«pa. There, in the tract of land known as Uttarakuru-varį¹£a, mother earth and all the other inhabitants worship Him with unfailing devotional service by repeatedly chanting the following Upaniį¹£ad mantra.
(SB 5.18.34)
The Supreme indestructible Lord is ascertained through the performance of ritualistic sacrifices and is therefore known as YajƱeÅvara. In His incarnation as Lord Boar, He raised the planet earth from the water at the bottom of the universe and kept it on His pointed tusks. May that Lord protect me from rogues on the street. May ParaÅurÄma protect me on the tops of mountains, and may the elder brother of Bharata, Lord RÄmacandra, along with His brother Lakį¹£maį¹a, protect me in foreign countries.
(SB 6.8.15)
The appearance of the wonderful and gigantic incarnation of Viį¹£į¹u as the mountainlike boar did not fill them with any kind of fear, although the Lord’s resounding voice was tumultuous and echoed horribly in all directions as an open threat to all demons who might challenge His omnipotency.
(SB 3.13.24 purport)
A devotee should always consider that Kį¹į¹£į¹a does not appear as an ordinary human being or ordinary beast; His appearance as VarÄha-mÅ«rti or a horse or tortoise is an exhibition of His internal potency.
(SB 4.8.57 purport)
