Prabhupāda:

“If I’m religious, then my economic condition will improve. First religion, then economic development. Why do I want to improve my economic condition? So that it will become easy to indulge in everything I desire to enjoy.”

“Dharmaḥ artha kāma” (Śrīmad Bhāgvatam 4.8.41, Caitanya-caritamṛta Ādi 1.90) . . . “And once I’ve enjoyed everything I desire, after that I’ll think about liberation.” The impersonalists want to become one with God, when they are dissatisfied with material desires . . . meaning they are not satisfied fulfilling their material desires, they think’ “Let me become God, then I’ll become the husband of the Goddess of Fortune.” This consciousness has nothing to do with devotional service to the Supreme Person.

Hence it is mentioned in the Bhāgavatam, “dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo ‘tra” (Śrīmad Bhāgvatam 1.1.2), all these deceptions . . . religion,, economic development, sense gratification and liberation have been brushed aside and rejected. “Dharmaḥ artha kāma” . . . “dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo ‘tra” . . . this is the highest, the one hundred-percent pure in heart. Devotional service is for the top-most transcendentalists, for those who desire only the Supreme Person. That’s all. Hmm. (end)
